Ralph Bakshi’s American Pop is an animated musical that chronicles the history of American popular music through the story of four generations of a Russian Jewish immigrant family of musicians. To make the film, Bakshi used the technique of rotoscoping, in which scenes are filmed with live actors and then traced over by animators who turn the footage into cartoons.
