Natan bar Moshe Naftali Hammerschlag, a seventeenth-century kabbalist, was also the official cantor and secretary of the Council of the Four Lands. According to the colophon, his Ilan de-adam kadmon (Sefirotic Diagram of the First Man) was copied from the writings of Ḥayim Vital, the most prominent disciple of Isaac Luria. Hammeschlag’s anthropomorphic depiction of the divine creation includes a mustache and a tongue on a face surmounted by a large crown.
