Posen Library Editorial Associate Position

Editorial Associate
(full-time position w/benefits, remote in the US)

About The Posen Library

The Posen Library of Jewish Culture and Civilization is a growing, landmark collection of Jewish literature, artwork, and artifacts, from the biblical to the contemporary period. Through printed volumes (Yale University Press) and an online digital site, The Posen Library aims to educate broad audiences about the diversity and richness of Jewish culture from around the world.

For the past 20 years, scholars have been researching, collecting, translating, and writing about these primary sources for The Posen Library. We release volumes as they are completed. By Spring 2021, half of the originally commissioned volumes will be available to the public. The remaining half will be released within the next few years.

The Posen Library team is currently comprised of six full-time staff members spread out across North America as well as multiple part-time staff and dozens of active contractors. While there is a small office in New York City, the team has largely always worked remotely.

The position

The Editorial Associate will work closely with the Executive Editor and a Senior Editor to help complete the two medieval volumes, which together cover the period between 600 CE and 1500 CE.

Tasks include but are not limited to:

  • Copyediting
  • Reviewing translations for accuracy and readability
  • Writing short descriptive texts that provide context for entries
  • Organizing Excel and Word files

Skill sets:

  • PhD (or ABD), in Jewish Studies, with a specialization in the medieval period
  • Scrupulous attention to detail and organization
  • Copyediting experience
  • Proficiency in medieval Hebrew
  • Knowledge of Judeo-Arabic, Latin, or any of the Romance languages, preferred
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Strong computer skills, especially in Microsoft Excel and Word, Dropbox, and Adobe
  • Independent initiative and resourceful problem-solving, along with excitement to be part of a team committed to one another’s growth
  • A sense of humor and ability to roll with the punches

The Editorial Associate position is remote, based in the US. Occasional travel may also be required for meetings and conferences. The position is salaried and includes health and vision benefits as well as paid vacation, parental leave, and family sick time. This is a 1-year term, beginning December 2020 or January 2021, with possibility for extension. A stable, high-speed internet connection is required for the position and must be provided by the employee.

The Posen Library is committed to an environment of mutual respect where equal employment opportunities are available to all applicants and teammates.

Interested candidates should email a letter of inquiry, the names of two recommenders, and a C.V. to Rachel Weinstein, Managing Editor, at rweinstein@posenlibrary.com by Friday, October 30, 2020.
