Description of His Career as a Revolutionary Soldier, 1777–1783

The son of Mordecai Sheftall, an important member of Georgia’s early Jewish community, and Frances Hart Sheftall, a housewife originally from the Hague, Sheftall Sheftall was born in Savannah. He joined his father in supporting the Revolutionary War, serving as Assistant Deputy Commissioner of Issues for the Continental Troops, in Georgia. Both Sheftall and his father were captured in 1778, during the fall of Savannah, and held as prisoners of war for more than a year in the West Indies. Following a prisoner exchange, Sheftall Sheftall continued to serve until the end of the war and eventually returned to Savannah.
