What is Extant from this Period?

In general, very little by way of material artifacts or artistic work used or created by Jews during the early medieval period has survived. Nevertheless, users will find a range of practical and decorative objects, synagogues and mikvaot (ritual baths), tombstones, manuscript books, and various documents.

While reflecting a continuity of traditional forms dating from the late antique period, these objects, buildings, and written materials also show the invigorating effects of new social and cultural environments.
