Creator Bio

Gottlieb Schumacher

1857–1925

Born in Zanesville, Ohio, Gottlieb Schumacher was a German-trained architect, cartographer, civil engineer, and archeologist. His father moved the family to a German Templar colony in Haifa in 1869. After studying engineering in Germany, Gottlieb returned to Palestine and was appointed chief engineer for the province of Acre by the Ottoman authorities. In addition, he served as the United States consular agent in Haifa (1891–1904). He also presided over an archeological dig in the ruins of the ancient city of Megiddo and created the first detailed maps of Transjordan and the Golan for the German Society for the Exploration of Palestine.
