Aḥai of Shabḥa
680–752
Little is known about Aḥai (or Aḥa) of Shabḥa, who at one time was a scholar in the Pumbedita academy, then located on the Euphrates, in Iraq. Sherira Ga’on reported that Aḥai left Iraq for Palestine after another was chosen to be gaon of the Pumbedita academy. In a responsum written by Sherira or his son Hayya Ga’on, Aḥai’s name is associated with a collection of Aramaic homilies known as She’iltot (Questions), although Aḥai’s role in assembling it is unknown.
