Aldo Carpi
Born in Milan, Aldo Carpi attended the Brera Academy of Fine Arts. In 1912, he participated in his first Venice Biennale; he continued to have pieces exhibited almost every year for the remainder of his life. While serving in the Italian Army during World War I, Carpi produced a number of sketches of the Serbian retreat, which were awarded a Gold Medal by the Ministry of Education. During the interwar years, Carpi became a notable stained-glass artist and, in 1930, a teacher at the Brera Academy. Surviving concentration camps at Mauthausen and Gusen, Carpi returned to his post at Brera and continued to produce award-winning art as well his Diario di Gusen (1971), his diary and sketchbook from the Holocaust.
