Frances Goodrich

1890–1984

New Jersey–born writer and dramatist Frances Goodrich was responsible for some of the best-loved movies of Hollywood’s Golden Age. Having graduated from Vassar College in 1912 and working with her husband Albert Hackett, Goodrich wrote the screenplays for such films as The Thin Man (1934), It’s a Wonderful Life (1946), and Father of the Bride (1950). The couple’s dramatization of The Diary of Anne Frank won the Tony Awards for Best Author and Best Play of 1956 as well as the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
