Franciscus Hogenberg

1535–1590

Frans Hogenberg (also known as Franciscus Hogenberg) was a Flemish and German painter, engraver, and mapmaker. Originally from Mechelen in Flanders, Belgium, he was banned from Antwerp as a Protestant in 1568. After spending a few years in London, he emigrated to Cologne, Germany. He collaborated with his son Abraham Hogenberg and Georg Braun on a book of town plans and views, the six-volume Civitates Orbis Terrarum, published between 1572 and 1617, which set new standards for cartography.
