Isaac Euchel
1756–1804
Born in Copenhagen, Isaac Euchel moved to Berlin when he was thirteen. He remained in Germany and became a significant figure in the Haskalah, organizing circles of young Jewish scholars. In Königsberg, he studied under Immanuel Kant. A Hebraist, Euchel was one of the editors of the journal Ha-me’asef. His Hebrew style is at its most brilliant in his biography of Moses Mendelssohn, which he wrote partly to introduce Mendelssohn’s ideas, hitherto published in German, to a Hebrew-reading audience.
