Jacob Senior

17th Century

Jacob ben Moses Senior was appointed ḥakham and ḥazan of the Jewish community of Pisa on September 9, 1635. He was relatively young at the time of his appointment, as communal documentation notes, and was soon to be married. However, he was already an accomplished scholar and author, making him suitable for the role. Several responsa by Jacob were included in Mayim rabim (Many Waters), a collection published by his grandson, Raphael Meldola, which also included some responsa by Raphael’s other grandfather, David Meldola.
