Judah ben Meir ha-Kohen

ca. 970/80–1050/1055

Judah ben Meir ha-Kohen was a leading figure in the Mainz academy and a student of Rabbenu Gershom (ca. 960–1040). Judah answered legal questions from across Central and Eastern Europe; more than sixty of his responsa survive. In his legal thinking, Judah had a strong independent streak. His collection of responsa is thought to have been titled The Book of Rules (Sefer ha-dinim).
