Raymond P. Scheindlin

b. 1940

Raymond P. Scheindlin is professor emeritus of the Jewish Theological Seminary. After receiving his training in Hebrew and Judaica at the Seminary, he received a Ph.D. in Arabic language and literature at Columbia University and went on to do research on medieval Hebrew poetry, especially that of the Islamic cultural world. Most of his books combine scholarly studies of medieval Hebrew poems with literary translations of the poems. His most recent books are Song of the Distant Dove: Judah Halevi’s Pilgrimage (Oxford, 2008); and Vulture in a Cage: Poems by Solomon Ibn Gabirol (Archipelago, 2016). He has recently completed a translation of a book-length poem by the fifteenth-century Italian Hebrew poet Moses da Rieti entitled Miqdash me’at, to be published in 2027. Many of Scheindlin’s translations appear in the Posen Library of Jewish Culture and Civilization.
