Samuel Ibn Jāmi‘

12th Century

The talmudist, lexicographer, and poet Samuel ben Jacob Ibn Jāmi‘ was a member of a leading family of North African Jews. Born in Gabès, Tunisia, Samuel met Abraham Ibn Ezra during the latter’s visits to North Africa, and the two later exchanged poems. Most of Samuel’s Arabic writings were lost or remain in manuscript, but his Hebrew comments on Nathan ben Yeḥiel of Rome’s Order (‘Arukh) have been printed.
