Sasson Somekh

1933–2019

Born in Baghdad, Sasson Somekh moved to Israel in 1951. A scholar and translator, he was a professor of modern Arab literature at Tel Aviv University and among the founders of the Arab Language Academy in Israel in 2007. He was the author of ten books, many translations of poetry, and a number of scholarly articles. Somekh received the Israel Prize in 2005.
