Shemariah ben Matsliaḥ

11th Century

Little is known about Shemariah ben Matsliaḥ. He earned the honorific title ḥaver (fellow) from the Palestinian academy and may have held a position of communal leadership. Shemariah came to support Solomon ben Judah in his bitter battle with Nathan ben Abraham over the Palestinian gaonate. The supporters of Nathan ben Abraham at one point intervened to prevent Shemariah from reciting Solomon’s name in public prayer, an honor traditionally accorded to the gaon.
