Francis Grant
A member of the Scottish landed gentry, Sir Francis Grant only turned to painting in his twenties after squandering his father’s inheritance. Largely self-taught, he became widely admired for his portrait paintings of aristocrats and political figures, as well as of royalty. He was commissioned to paint several portraits of Queen Victoria. He was prolific; there are approximately 800 paintings attributed to him.
