Cicero
106–43 BCE
Marcus Tullius Cicero was a Roman statesman and lawyer. He was famous for his oratory skills and rose to positions of power during the reign of Julius Caesar. Cicero’s De re publica (On the Commonwealth) and De legibus (On the Laws) present political ideals and dialogues on social harmony. Several other works on rhetoric by Cicero and many of his speeches survive. Following Caesar’s assassination and many years of enmity with Mark Antony, Antony had Cicero killed.
