Solomon and the Demons

The pervasive belief in a world filled with angels and demons was characteristic of late antiquity and the early rabbinic period. In one particularly rich talmudic passage, the rabbis discuss Solomon’s effort to employ a specific demon to help construct the First Temple, and the antics that ensued. Solomon is traditionally considered the author of the Song of Songs, Ecclesiastes, and Proverbs, and many of the biblical verses woven throughout this passage are drawn from these works.
