Prayer of Simon the High Priest for Israel’s Deliverance

Third Maccabees is a historical narrative in the style of romance written in Greek and originating in the Egyptian Jewish community, probably Alexandria. Although set in the time of Ptolemy IV Philopator (r. 221–204 BCE), it likely was written later, sometime after 215 BCE but before 70 CE. In the narrative, Simon’s prayer is occasioned by the king’s desire to enter the sanctuary of the Jerusalem Temple, which would be an act of desecration. Simon appeals to God’s past acts on behalf of the people and to God’s pity for sinful Israel.
