The Book of the Mysteries

Sefer ha-razim is a Jewish cosmological magical composition. It contains a series of accounts of the seven heavens and the types of angels that dwell in each. After each heaven is described, the text provides recipes that lay out how to force the angels of that heaven to fulfill one’s needs in their area of expertise. The seventh heaven is the realm of God alone, and instead of recipes, there is an extended hymn of praise. The text shows the interrelationship between Greco-Egyptian and Jewish magical practices, as it includes Greco-Egyptian magical invocations, and there are parallels between its recipes and those of Greek-speaking Egyptian magicians.
