How to Show Respect for a Synagogue
[With respect to] synagogues, [we] do not treat them with irreverence: One should not enter them in the heat because of the heat, nor in the cold because of the cold, nor in the rain because of the rain, and [we] do not eat in them, nor drink in them, nor sleep in them, nor stroll through them, nor derive benefit from them. But, [we may] recite [scripture], teach, and expound in them; a eulogy for many [people] may be eulogized in them. R. Judah said: In [what context] were these words said? When [the synagogues] are settled. But [when the synagogues are] in ruins, [we] leave them and [allow] grass to grow in them out of grief.
