Elijah ben Solomon ha-Kohen

11th Century

Elijah ben Solomon ha-Kohen, a member of a leading family of Palestinian Jewry, was av bet din (head of the court, the secondmost-senior member of the Palestinian academy) in Jerusalem from 1053 and led it as gaon from 1062 to 1083, after the death of Daniel ben ‘Azariah. Elijah lived in Jerusalem until the Seljuks gained control of Palestine in the early 1070s, driving out the Fātimids, and the academy moved to Tyre, in southern Lebanon. In 1081, Elijah publicly declared that his son Evyatar (author of The Scroll of Evyatar) would head the academy.
