Treatise on Asthma

Perhaps his best-known medical work, Moses Maimonides’ Treatise on Asthma (Maqāla fī’l-rabw ) deals with the symptoms and treatment of an asthma-like disease. Maimonides wrote this book-length work for a wealthy Muslim patient. The patient turned to Maimonides after treatments proposed by other doctors had failed. Following Galenic theory, Maimonides begins by recapitulating the information he evidently received from his patient, which he uses to explain his diagnosis. Both Latin and Hebrew translations of this work survive. These excerpts, drawn from various parts of the work, offer an unusually intimate glimpse into Maimonides’ work as a physician and some of his personal tastes and daily activities. The last passages contain a number of stories of mistakes made by lesser doctors.
