This halakhic work is made up of a “Mishnah” (here called “Baraita”), which may preserve traditions that predate the Babylonian Talmud, and a “Gemara” that postdates the Babylonian Talmud. Despite the title, only the first two chapters deal with marriage and family law. The others treat ethics and Torah study. This Hebrew work circulated widely among Jews in both Muslim and Christian lands, in fluctuating versions.
