AI Policy

Our Approach to AI

The Posen Library affirms the infinite worth of all people and the unique gifts with which each of us is endowed. This includes recognizing the dignity of human work and the value of human creativity and expertise. We are a humanities project designed to showcase the breadth of Jewish history and culture, in which accuracy, contextual depth, and interpretive nuance are paramount. 

At the Posen Library, human expertise and oversight remain central to our work. Our core content, starting with the first primary sources in the print volumes and extending to our newest online educational material, has always been developed without AI. The Posen team uses AI as a tool, subject to human review, around the margins of our core content to assist in delivering the highest-quality content to our users. We will not replace scholarly judgment, historical interpretation, or the academic expertise that our work requires with AI. 

More than the processing of bits and bytes, the pursuit of knowledge and understanding are creative human pursuits. These uniquely human endeavors will remain the heart of the Posen Library.

Examples of How We Use AI:

We currently use AI to support the core of our content in the following ways:

On the back end of the site: 

• Keyword generation for site search
• Search engine optimization and metadata generation 

On the front end of the site: 

• To generate first drafts of: 
  • Summaries of entries and educational materials 
  • Discussion questions 

All of this content is reviewed, edited, and approved by Posen Library staff members. 

We are exploring the use of AI to train a custom AI-search tool on our content to help learners search the Posen Library website to discover relevant guides, modules, maps, images, and entries in response to their questions. 

We are committed to transparent use of AI on our site.
