What Is 1 Corinthians?
The First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians (1 Corinthians), in the New Testament, is considered an authentic letter from Paul to a community of Jesus followers that he founded in Corinth, Greece, which was mostly gentile but included some Jews. Paul responds to a letter from the community asking for guidance on several issues and to information that he received about conflicts among its members. Among the many topics addressed in Paul’s letter are marriage and celibacy, eating food sacrificed to idols, the equality of Jewish and gentile Jesus followers, women’s roles, and resurrection of the dead. Behind the letter lies a belief in the imminence of Christ’s resurrection and the eschatological age.
