Pliny the Elder
23/24–79
Pliny the Elder, a Roman historian and soldier, wrote the comprehensive Naturalis historia (Natural History), a thirty-seven volume work that discusses the natural world and human events. Many consider Natural History to be the first encyclopedia. Pliny died during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79.
