Augustine
354–430
Born into a Berber family with roots in North Africa, Augustine of Hippo was raised by a pagan father and a Christian mother. He explored Manichaeism and Neoplatonism before converting to Christianity in 386. Augustine eventually became a bishop and was canonized after his death. His writings include Confessions, which describes his sinful youth and ultimate conversion, and The City of God, a polemical defense of Christianity.
