Hillel ha-Ḥazan ben Eli
Hillel, 11th Century–12th Century
Hillel ha-Ḥazan ben Eli was a prominent scribe and court clerk for the Jewish community of Fustāt (Old Cairo) in the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries. Dated documents from Hillel’s hand were written between 1066 and 1108, and his texts constitute the second-largest scribal collection within the Cairo Geniza, only surpassed by that of his son-in-law Ḥalfon ben Manasseh. Hillel sided with Mevorakh ben Se‘adya in his battle with David ben Daniel. Hillel also served as a cantor and appears to have had roots in Baghdad.
