Judah Ibn Ghiyath

Late 11th to Mid-12th Century

Judah ben Isaac Ibn Ghiyath was the son of the illustrious leader of Andalusi Jewry, Isaac Ibn Ghiyath (1038–1089). Born in Lucena, Judah Ibn Ghiyath later lived in Granada, where he maintained relationships with leading Jewish poets of his day. He and Judah ha-Levi (ca. 1075–1141) corresponded by exchanging poems, often written in identical meters. About a dozen of Ibn Ghiyath’s poems survive, as well as some of the letters he sent to Judah ha-Levi.
