Menaḥem ben Solomon

12th Century

Few biographical details can be stated with certainty about the midrashist, halakhist, and grammarian Menaḥem ben Solomon. It is not even known where he lived. Although some Italian words appear in his Hebrew writings, he fails to cite leading Italian works of earlier generations. His biblical commentary A Good Mind (Sekhel tov) deals with midrashic and philological matters. In his grammatical work, Touchstone (Even boḥan), he cited earlier grammarians; he seems to have favored the idea that Hebrew verbs could have roots of one or two letters.
