The Duties of a Student to His Master

R. Levi in the name of R. Ḥama bar Ḥaninah said: [ . . . ] Ordinarily [derekh ha-arets], a disciple carries [utensils] for him and walks in front of the master. [ . . . ] Ordinarily, the disciple goes first and his master after him. [ . . . ] Ordinarily, a disciple washes his master. [ . . . ] Ordinarily, a disciple dresses his master. [ . . . ] Ordinarily, a disciple puts on his master’s shoe. [ . . . ] Ordinarily, a disciple carries his master [on a sedan chair]. [ . . . ] Ordinarily, the master sleeps and the disciple stands at his side. [ . . . ]
