The Students of R. Yoḥanan ben Zakkai

R. Yoḥanan ben Zakkai received [the Oral Torah] from Hillel and from Shammai. He would say: If you have learned much Torah, do not claim credit for yourself, since you were created for this [purpose]. R. Yoḥanan ben Zakkai had five students, and they are: R. Eliezer ben Hyrkanos, and R. Joshua ben Ḥananiah, and R. Yosi the Priest, and R. Simeon ben Netanel, and R. Eleazar ben Arakh. He would mention their praises: R. Eliezer ben Hyrkanos—a plastered cistern that does not lose a drop [of water]; R. Joshua ben Ḥananiah—happy is the [woman] who gave birth to him; R. Yosi the Priest—a pious man; R. Simeon ben Netanel—a fearer of sin; R. Eleazar ben Arakh—a spring that becomes stronger.
