The Good Girl

Born in Livorno to a family whose New Christian ancestors arrived in the region in the sixteenth century, Sabatino Lopez studied at public schools before attending the University of Pisa. In 1889, he debuted his drama Orianna, the first of nearly seventy plays he would write. In addition to his writing, Lopez served as chair of the Milan Zionist Organization and director of the Società Italiana degli Autori ed Editori, and he taught at Milan’s fine arts school, the Brera Academy, for twenty years. One of his sons, Robert, became a medieval historian at Yale and another son, Guido, became a journalist and novelist.
