The day is coming; its essence is dread
The day is coming; its essence is dread.
Like smoke from a chimney, its panic ascends.
It greatly overcomes all—who can bear it?
And who can withstand it when it appears?
One who is at peace and in safety—horror will come to them.
One who has forgotten about death—disaster will take them.
One who is lying down happy—screaming will awaken them.
Their soul will leave; they will return to the earth.
It is the bitter day, burning like a furnace,
bitter as the sea’s waters, and as stormy.
A cup of wine intoxicates all and rebukes them,
quickly causing them to slumber, to sleep forever.
Happy is the one who sees with eyes of understanding
that the soul will be triumphant when it leaves.
It will ascend and contemplate the palaces of wisdom,
and one’s righteousness will fnd a place of rest, where one will settle.
