Oppression and Exodus

The Exodus story occupies much of the second book of the Hebrew Bible. The power of the story rests in the many interpretive layers that Jews and non-Jews have added to the narrative through centuries of engaging with the foundational story of the march from enslavement to freedom, the birth of a national hero, and the guiding hand of divine providence. These selections from the book of Exodus highlight many of the key moments in the biblical narrative. In reading the source text, in conversation with hundreds of years of interpretive traditions, we can appreciate the endurance of these ideas, as well as the continuing need to refine and reshape key biblical elements.
