Daniel’s Penitential Prayer for Judean Restoration

Daniel’s prayer is one of several late biblical penitential prayers that became paradigmatic for other prayers in this genre. In particular, the phrase “Righteousness is on your side, O Lord, but open shame falls on us” (Daniel 9:7) comes to be a hallmark of this style. The prayer is mostly communal, phrased in the first-person plural, but it is framed narratively as the intercessory prayer of a prophet and leader on behalf of the community. Note that the prayer is accompanied by the penitential acts of fasting and putting on sackcloth and ashes—all gestures of self-mortification.
