How to Achieve Eternal Life

In this passage, a rich young man asks Jesus how he can guarantee himself eternal life. The question is noteworthy in light of the belief that “all Israel has a portion in the world to come” (m. Sanhedrin 10:1). Jesus responds that he should keep the Torah’s laws, detailing a number of select commandments, and finally suggests that to ensure “treasure in heaven,” he should sell his earthly possessions and give the money to the poor.
