Jesus Predicts the Destruction of the Temple and the End Times

The word apocalypse comes from the Greek word for “revelation” and so describes a genre of literature wherein secrets are revealed (see APOCALYPTIC LITERATURE). Apocalyptic texts foretell the great event that will usher in the “reign of God” and often feature a messianic figure who will be among God’s agents in this transformative time, during which the world will be judged and evil destroyed.

Historians consider apocalyptic writings a tool of political and psychological resistance by those who consider themselves oppressed or feel powerless, in that they have the power to sustain the belief that the kingdom of God is imminent and that when it comes, God will right all wrongs. This belief system helps make sense of the suffering of the righteous in this world.

The Gospel of Mark is an apocalyptic text, in that it is concerned with the end times, imminent judgment, and the establishment of the kingdom of God. In the Markan apocalypse, Jesus foretells that the Temple will be “thrown down” and warns of false prophets, his own suffering for his followers, and other catastrophic events. For the synoptic parallels to this passage, see Matthew 24 and Luke 21.
