This brief text requests that two wealthy Jews fulfill their pledge to pay the jizya (annual poll tax, a tax on non-Muslims mandated by Islamic law) on behalf of the local cantor. Although the cantor held a position of honor, he was not paid particularly well and evidently faced financial challenges. In this case, two individuals volunteered to cover his payment as charity and to repay al-Makīn Abū ’l-‘Izz the Levite for his initial payment.
