Nebuchadnezzar Dreams of Four Great Empires

In this excerpt from the biblical book of Daniel, Daniel recounts and then interprets King Nebuchadnezzar’s dream. He explains that the great statue made of gold, silver, bronze, and clay in the dream represents the four great empires, of which Nebuchadnezzar’s own Babylonian Empire is the first, followed by Media, Persia, and Greece. He foretells that each empire will be destroyed and that the final empire will ultimately be replaced by the kingdom of God.
