Receipt for Sale of a Vineyard (Marunya, Spain)

[Latin:] In the name of the Lord.

I, Joseph the Jew, am the seller to you, Andreas Sutor, and to your wife named Eliardis. It is declared therefore through this document that I sell to you, of my own volition, my own vineyards, which lie in the city of Barcelona in the area of Marruñana. These vineyards, on the same land on which they are planted, which came to us through purchase or through any other circumstances. On its east, it borders the river; in the south, the vineyard of Solomon the Jew, surnamed Finos; in the west, the vineyard of Guilielm Petrus and the uncultivated area, which belonged to Dursudus Blandricus and was joined together; on its north, the vineyards of the nuns of St. Peter Cenobus in the aforementioned city. I sell to you as much as these borders include and the ends encompass, and by my law I relinquish my right to your land completely—including both the ways in and the ways out—into your possession, to do what you wish to do with these vineyards and the land on which they are planted. And I received from you the aforementioned price of fifty solidi of good silver which you, the buyers, gave to me and I, the seller, received in my hands, and it has been declared. If I, the seller, or another man or woman comes forward against this sale or attempts to impede or infringe it, their attempt will not be valid. They would pay back to you double the entire amount, along with any improvements to the property. And above all, it shall remain firm for all time. This was done on the 3rd day before the kalends of June in the 32nd year of the reign of King Philip.

[Hebrew:] We, the undersigned, are aware, in the form of clear testimony, that Joseph ben Nathaniel Ḥazan, said to us:

“Be witnesses for me, and perform a legal act of acquisition from me, and write and sign on my behalf, with all expressions of the transfer of rights, and give it to And[reas] and Eliarda, for it to be in their possession as their legal right. As I received from them sixty-five refined silver dinars, for which I sold any portion and right I possess of a vineyard in Marruñana, which I purchased from the heirs of Meir ben David, in accordance with terms written above in their writing.”

Regarding that which was before us, we wrote and signed, in the month of Sivan, in the year 4852 to the creation [1092 CE], and we gave it to them to serve as proof and for their rights,
