A Single Judge in a Synagogue
R. Abbahu was sitting as sole judge in the inclining synagogue of Caesarea. His students said to him: Did the rabbi not teach, “Do not judge sitting alone”? He told them: Since you see me sitting alone as a judge and they come to me, it is because they accepted this. It was stated thus: “When was this said? If they did not accept it. But if they accepted it, he even judges as sole judge.”
