Mishnah Mo‘ed (Appointed Seasons)

The second order of the Mishnah, Mo‘ed (Appointed Seasons), contains rules for the observance of the biblically commanded Sabbath and holy days, festivals, and fasts (see FESTIVALS AND SABBATH OBSERVANCE). The excerpts presented here are taken from tractates Shabbat, which elaborates extensive and often minute regulations in connection with the prohibitions of work (i.e., creative and other deliberate activity), carrying, and travel on the Sabbath; Yoma, which rehearses the Temple ritual and fasting practices for Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement; Rosh Hashanah, which covers calendrical matters and the rituals and Temple service for the celebration of the New Year; and Ḥagigah, concerning the festival offering brought by pilgrims to Jerusalem.
