Yeshu‘a ben Judah’s highly literal Judeo-Arabic translation of the Torah was one of several Karaite translations that competed with the translation of Se‘adya Ga’on, who was a Rabbanite. Yeshu‘a’s rendering made the Bible accessible to Jews who had trouble understanding the Hebrew original; the translation also formed the basis of his own lengthy commentary. In this excerpt, it is noteworthy that in Genesis 4:4, Yeshu‘a has a “priest of God,” rather than God, turn toward Abel’s offering. The ellipsis indicates a lacuna in the manuscript. The brackets indicate parts of the translation that are not literal renderings but authorial glosses.
