Sharecropping Agreement for a Vineyard (Lucena, Spain)
We attest to the following: So-and-so, son of Mr. So-and-so, said to us:
Be my witnesses for an acquisition. Write the document, sign it, and give it to Mr. So-and-so. For I have acquiesced of my own free will, wholeheartedly, readily, and in a generous manner, and I have granted him the sharecropping of an entire vineyard that I possess here in Lucena, in such-and-such a spot, near the vineyard of [name to be inserted here] and the vineyard of [name to be inserted here]. Part of this vineyard is bare, without vines, and it will be planted by this person, and he shall make improvements between the vines, in any places where it is needed, and he should work [Hebrew unclear] and toil in this vineyard by pruning and digging for such-and-such a number of years, starting from the date of this document, executing fine labor. He shall bring into it such-and-such loads of manure during this period. Since he will incur, throughout this period, all the fixed expenses of guarding the entire vineyard and bringing the grapes to the wine press and of their pressing, this person shall thereby earn such-and-such a portion of the fruit. After this period, when this Mr. So-and-so has completed all these conditions, he shall immediately be entitled to such-and-such a portion of the vine itself and of its fruit, from my own property. If one of us then wishes to divide it, he has the right to demand it, and I, So-and-so, will take this portion, and So-and-so will take that portion.
I have acquiesced to these terms of my own free will, and I have brought this Mr. So-and-so into ownership of such-and-such a portion of this vineyard under the conditions detailed above, and I have thereby granted him full rights without any possibility of retraction or claim in this regard forever. This Mr. So-and-so thus accepted upon himself all the conditions set forth in this document by means of an act of acquisition, and that he will not try to release himself from all he agreed to with this So-and-so, by a complete and whole acceptance. Accordingly, both parties declared to us: We have accepted upon ourselves and all our heirs the guarantee for this sharecropping agreement, and the ramifications of all that is written in this document as prescribed by the sages. It is not like a transaction with questionable consent, nor like a template of documents. An act of acquisition was performed by Mr. So-and-so for So-and-so regarding everything written above, a complete acquisition in the month of [date to be inserted here].
