Bill of Sale (Barcelona)
[Latin:] In the name of the Lord.
I, Ruben Bellihominis, a Jew, and my wife, Sara, a Jewish woman, are the sellers to you, Richard Guilielm, the buyer. In accordance with this document of our sale, we sell you four modiatas of vineyard with the land where they are planted. They are in the region of Barcelona in the neighborhood of Mugoria. They came to us through our purchase and with full authority. These four modiatas of vineyard, with the land where they are planted, have the following boundaries: on the north, up to the vineyards belonging to you, the buyer; on the south, to the paved road; on the west, to the land belonging to the woman Geberga. We sell you these four modiatas—the amount included in these boundaries, with the land they are planted in—in their entirety, along with the ways in and out of them.
The price is 210 mancusi of pure gold in the coin of Barcelona, weighed out properly at the weight of ten to the ounce. You, the buyer, have given us this price, and we, the sellers, have received it in our hands. No part of the price remains to be paid by you, the buyer. We declare that we are conveying these four modiatas of vineyard from our lawful right into your ownership and control, so that you may do whatever you wish with them, in full possession. If we, the sellers, or any person of either sex, should come forward to break this document of sale, their objection shall not be valid, but that person shall, or we shall, pay you triple the stated payment along with the price of any improvements to the property. And the sale shall remain firm at all times. Done the 4th day before the ides of July in the 6th year of the reign of King Philip.
[Hebrew:] I, Sarah, daughter of R. Joseph Cocho, and I, Reuben, husband of this Mistress Sarah, have enacted this sale to Don Ricard Guilielm for 210 fine gold coins, of Barcelona value—each individually weighed, for a total weight of ten to an ounce—of four modiatae of vineland which we possess within the borders of this country, in a place called Mugoria. They are marked by their four ditches [Hebrew unclear]. We perform this with all strengths, rights, and with the portion that we own there, as written above in their text. This transaction that we have made with him is a full-fledged sale, which cannot be changed or retracted, forever. It is upheld, as written above in their text. We, the witnesses whose signatures appear below, attest that this Mistress Sarah, daughter of R. Joseph, and her husband, R. Reuben, son of R. Solomon, performed a legal action of acquisition before us. We wrote and signed on Monday, the 6th of the month of Av, in the year 4825 to the creation of the world [1065 CE], according to the counting we use here, in the city of Barcelona.
The words above that appear between the lines are confirmed and established.
Nathan ben Judah. Isaac ben Joseph.
