Fighting on the Sabbath

First Maccabees relates that during the Maccabean revolt, a pious group of Jews chose not to profane the Sabbath by bearing arms and fighting against their gentile attackers. As a result, they were slaughtered. Mattathias, the leader of the revolt, and his followers decided after this incident that it was better to profane the Sabbath by fighting in self-defense than to let themselves be slaughtered.
